The Marsh Fellows is a story that is full of second chances, whimsy, and adventure that is sure to delight audiences young and old. Sullivan does a great job of creating an imaginative world that is constantly raining, but never gloomy. Despite the lack of sunlight, its residents have managed to make this island their home the best they can. It was so much fun to travel through all the nooks and crannies of Slumber City. The artwork is vibrant, yet detailed in showcasing the characters and the little hidden surprises within the town.
Love Radio was a really refreshing YA Contemporary Romance fiction novel. It’s a good mixture of romance growing up self-discovery, moving on, and healing with your past. I loved watching the relationship progress between Danielle and Prince and thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters featured in the story. Most of all I loved how it showcased all the things that are special about my hometown (Detroit) and being an avid music and book lover I think anyone who is a fan of either will truly enjoy this book as it delves deep into music and literature history/knowledge.
I love her Colbert’s ability to weave many complex things into the plot without overwhelming the reader. The mystery revelation (which I wont spoil) brings up some history that is often overlooked and that is important to discuss. The novel also focuses on how change can be difficult especially when it comes to middle school friendships (and something I know all about). Readers get to watch Albert and Edie grow through great character development over the course of the novel and how they tackle relationship obstacles in their lives.
This novel has the right amount of spookiness that is not too scary, but still creates an eerie atmosphere. Because our main characters are the monsters themselves, the creepy aspects of the story are the unknown creatures that lie in hidden sight. I enjoyed that Meg along with her own journey of learning more about herself becomes an amateur sleuth of sorts. She has to juggle her own mysteries along with protecting her family from harm. Roche makes novel such a fun fast-paced read that is very heartwarming and also is relatable.
A Sweet Mess follows the story of Audrey Choi who is owns a bakery called Comfort Zone. Audrey is a fiery main character who is confident in her cooking skills. She knows she’s a good baker and is determined to prove to others that Comfort Zone is full of tasty treats. I admired her spontaneous nature and her inquisitive nature of trying new food combos in the kitchen. Not only is this is a romance novel but it’s also about the power of food.
Oye is an incredibly heartfelt and emotional book as there are some serious moments due to Abue’s declining health, Luciana struggling with her sexuality, and the strain that the past as well as distance can put on a family’s relationship. But most of all this novel is full of hilarious moments that will make the reader laugh out loud and put a smile on your face. Abue, by far, is one of the most memorable characters I’ve read so far in 2024 and her character alone was one of my favorite parts of the novel. I loved her vivacious nature and sassiness when it comes to interacting with family and anyone
