For Agyemang’s adult novel debut, she takes elements of magic and creates a rich story as she’s done with her work before. The novel follows Sianna’s journey to study at Westfield University which on the surface seems like the ultimate academic destination for propelling her future. Of course, things aren’t as they seem and the more Sianna explores the hallowed halls she discovers the school is hiding a dangerous history that is destroying it’s students and causing tragedy. She teams up with Kasem in order to break the curse that ends up tying them together and to stop the madness on campus before someone else gets hurt.

This novel was thrilling, a page turner, and felt very immersive. The world building is done so well from the elaborate hidden passageways of the school to the lore behind its creation. Nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted at all. everything feels fleshed out with great detail and I enjoyed the complexity of the characters in the story. Because the curse, secret societies, and history of everything is tied together it makes it more difficult for the main characters to make choices in dire consequences. The stakes were high throughout the entire story which had me on the edge of my seat. One wrong decision, and the butterfly effects cause so much destruction.

Agyemang does a fantastic job of keeping an aura of suspense and plenty of clues while reading without giving away all of the secrets. I became so invested in Sianna’s story of trying to find her own path while discovering the true strength of her powers. I also like how the romance was interwoven with the overall plot and the (somewhat) love triangle kept things interesting too. It felt natural rather than forced as well.

My favorite part of this novel was how the supernatural elements were done! It definitely caught me off guard in the best way and added to the overall reading experience. Divine Oaths is such a thrilling read!
