Synopsis:

1918. Orcas Island, Washington.

Lucy Nowhere has spent her eighteen years working on the vast estate of the eccentric shipbuilder who took her in after she washed ashore in a green canoe as a baby. But she has long wished for a life off the island, and in a matter of days, she is set to leave for college—and, for the first time, choose her own future.

Then she finds her employer’s severed head on the beach. Rumors swirl that a mischievous spirit and its minions, the sea wolves, have struck again. Lucy doesn’t believe in myths. She knows that a human—a human murderer—killed him. And when she is unexpectedly named heiress to the estate, she understands the next target is her.

Her closest friend, the estate’s vigilant young guard, begs her to escape while she can. But Lucy knows the only way she can discover who she is, and free the island of its curse, is to find the real killer—before she becomes the next victim.

Review:

A mysterious island, history, and a murder mystery to solve all awaits the reader within the Heiress of Nowhere. Like Lee’s other novels, this is a solid historical fiction novel through and through. I appreciate all the care and research she does into telling overlooked or niche parts of the past.

This novel focuses mainly on Washington in the early 1900s through the setting of Orcas Island. Now known as Moran State Park it transitioned from an agricultural economy to a popular summer resort destination. Though impossible to cover the entire history of the island Lee does write about the Straits Salish peoples (Lummi tribe), fishing culture, and limestone-producing region. I found the history to be very fascinating and I’m curious to learn more about the island.

What made this novel so enjoyable to read was the heavy gothic atmosphere the reader is immersed in. Lucy takes through a world of a dark, moody house that looms over a island with more secrets than we can bear. The landscape though ominous at times is picturesque and the smallest details brought the story to life. Each character we come across has some information they withhold making you put on your amateur sleuth hat. The overall character development was smooth and readers will enjoy how Lucy becomes more confident as she grows into her role as heiress and navigates the complicated feelings surrounding her upbringing.

I liked the addition of romance in this story as it didn’t take too much away from the original plot and the overall mystery keeps the reader on their toes. Lee has once again crafted a beautiful, yet mysterious tale rich with history and characters that will spark your curiosity. A recommended read for sure!
