Recommended Reads: Books For The Summer!

RecommendedSummer Reads (1)

The sun is high in the sky, the air is warm, and the sounds of ice cream trucks fill the air. These things can only mean that summer is finally here. Everywhere I seem to go now there is always a person outdoors with a book in hand. Hopefully, I can get some reading done outside this year as well if the bugs don’t eat me alive. 🙁 Last week I shared some of the books I have planned for my summer reading TBR. This time around I wanted to share some reads I’d like to recommend to you for summertime reading. I hope you enjoy these picks!

my life on the road

My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem

This novel was a fantastic exploration into Gloria Steinem’s life on the road from her early childhood years to today. It’s very interesting to hear her discuss the different types of people that she meets on her journeys. In her book,  she takes valuable life lessons from the people she meets and they are in turn they are  influenced by her. While I only knew a little bit about Steinem’s life, I learned a lot more about her as a person and her accomplishments after reading this book. I’d recommend this to people who enjoy reading about cross-country road trips or want to learn more about Gloria’s career.

The Girl From Everywhere

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig

If you’re looking for an adventure on the high seas that takes you back in time, The Girl From Everywhere, is definitely your book. The whole novel follows the main character, Nix, when her and her father has a lead to finding the map which would lead him to Nix’s mother. But if they manage to complete the journey to 1868 Honolulu, will Nix cease to exist? The writing in this book is so good, the character development is smooth, and the action keeps readers constantly entertained.

the third daughter

The Third Daughter (The Royals of Dharia #1) by Susan Kaye Quinn

For those that enjoy Steampunk and the Sci-Fi genre, The Third Daughter presents an exciting tale of espionage, romance, and suspense. The main protagonist, Aniri, is close to reaching her 18th birthday where she’ll be free to marry who she loves. But before that can happens a marriage proposal comes from a barbarian prince in the north and if she refuses, the threat of their new flying weapon might bring war. What happens next is a series of twists and turns to keep readers on their toes.

Disney_Kingdoms_Seekers_Of_The_Weird_Cover

Seekers of the Weird by Brandon Seifert

Heading into comic book territory, Seekers of the Weird presents a fun tale for all ages. The story is based on the unused attraction concept for the Museum of the Weird at Disney and focuses on the story of brother and sister, Maxwell & Melody. The duo try to save their parents from an evil society who seek the Coffin Clock. The visuals in this comic are stunning and I loved the “museum of the weird” concept. If you are interested in comics, adventure stories, and fantasy, I think you’ll enjoy this book.

spook light

Spook Lights: Southern Gothic Horror by Eden Royce

For readers that like a little “spook” in their stories, Spook Lights is a wonderful collection of southern Gothic horror tales. While most of these tales are about things that go “bump in the night”, these stories are not all about jump scares and intense gore. Instead Royce uses a subtle style of horror where the tension slowly rises in each tale. The blend of fantasy, the supernatural, and the real world gives the stories so many entertaining elements. This book is a god pick if you can’t handle intense horror books.

    1. Yes, I did finish reading The Third Daughter and I loved it.I just haven’t gotten around to posting a mini-review of it yet. Sorry! The series is a trilogy and I’ve yet to read the other two books. You have to read The Girl From Everywhere, it’s such a great novel! 🙂

  1. Wonderful list! I’m so glad to read your recommendation of “The Girl from Everywhere”, I have been seeing this around a lot and now am motivated to read it already 🙂 Also the collection of southern gothic stories sounds fascinating – I recently ‘discovered’ this genre and simply love it.
