Today’s Video: Binge Reading Bad Reviews

Found At: Book Riot

In this weekly’s dose of bookish videos Sharifah from Book Riot talks about her bad habit of binge reading one-star reviews of her least favorite books. I could relate to this video on a lot of levels. There is usually a 50/50 chance of me reading a review before I actually read a book. Most of the time if I haven’t been exposed to a positive or negative of book that’s reviewed on the blogosphere, I’ll go ahead and read it anyway. Sometimes it ends up being a DNF read or book I actually enjoy. But like Sharifah says, if a book I’m reading is absolutely horrid, I’ll keep reading bad reviews of it on Goodreads. It’s a horrible habit I know, but I can’t help it. Plus sometimes I actually like reading bad reviews such as Tumblr blogs like “One Star Book Reviews”, which are hilarious. The reviews are poorly written and are not concrete, making them fun to read. I don’t like writing bad reviews, but if I absolutely hated or felt a book was that bad, I do try my best to give concrete examples of why I disliked it.

Question of the week: What is the worst review you have seen or what is the last bad review you had to write?

  1. I’ve seen some pretty horrible reviews, but I can’t recall the worse. If I didn’t like a book, I too will look up bad reviews on Goodreads and sometimes Amazon and binge a little on them. It’s a way of getting some justification for how I feel. I think the last bad one I wrote was for Vic James’s Gilded Cage, which I intended to be a normal bad review but became a rant. I think it’s easy to go from love to hate. I started the book thinking I’d love it despite the bad reviews I’d seen but ended up disliking it. I’d still like to try another book by her though.

    1. Yep, I agree about “getting some justification for how I feel” aspect. Sometimes I get so hyped up for a book, an then when I’m let down by it, I search for other reviews that are similar to mine so I know I’m not the only person that felt this way about a book.
